Use two different versions (view modes) of a referenced entity in the referencing entity's content display

That title is way more confusing than what we’re trying to do:

An article references an author content type.

When viewing an article, we want to show the author’s image from the author content type (one reference of the field)

It’s possible with EVA (Entity Views Attach):

https://drupal.stackexchange.com/questions/250449/display-entity-reference-field-twice-with-different-display-modes

Requires using Display Suite, ugh:

https://www.drupal.org/project/display_field_copy

Someone was working on an upgrade but didn’t get encouragement, sadly:

https://www.drupal.org/project/entdispfieldui/issues/2903483

https://drupal.stackexchange.com/questions/244200/custom-entries-in-entity-view-modes/244223#244223

But the code is probably pretty much ready to use in D8. It’s not clear to me if it depends on https://www.drupal.org/project/entdisp which does not appear to be ported.

Then there’s this, which is very cool and definitely tangential but not the same thing: https://www.drupal.org/project/entityreference_multiple
